Marca España, officially designated as promoter of the Spanish language
On February 1, the Official State Gazette (BOE) officialised the designation of the Office of the High Commissioner for Marca España as coordinator of the national strategy for the promotion of Spanish as a global language.
At present, several unconnected initiatives are being carried out to promote the Spanish language and culture. With the aim of coordinating these initiatives and designing new ones, the Government of Spain has amended the regulatory law for the High Commissioner for Marca España (Royal Decree 998/2012) by virtue of Royal Decree 49/2018, giving Marca España the authority to develop a national strategy for the promotion of Spanish from a global perspective.
The High Commissioner for Marca España, a position currently held by Carlos Espinosa de los Monteros, will thus become the High Commissioner for Marca España and the Promotion of the Spanish Language, reporting to the Foreign Policy Council at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Spanish, a global language
The government’s language promotion campaign, highlighting the value and boosting the use of Spanish, basically consists of the project titled, ‘Spanish, a global language’.
The project includes initiatives like Business for the Spanish Language Plan, a plan similar to Olympic Sports Association (ADO) Programme inviting Spanish and Latin American companies and multinational corporations to become language sponsors.
Other measures in the new language policy are the development of an Erasmus programme for Latin American students; the establishment of ‘Ambassadors of Spanish as a Global Language’; the design of a digital content platform in Spanish; and incentives to the development of new applications, technologies and digital services in Spanish.
