Spain’s leading role in ‘Game of Thrones’

San Juan de Gaztelugatxe (Basque Country)
San Juan de Gaztelugatxe (Basque Country)

Following Jon Snow, Daenerys Targaryen and Tyrion Lannister in their S07 adventures, Game of Thrones fans will come across familiar landscapes. This is because season 7 of the popular HBO show was shot in several spots across our country.

Game of Thrones S07 locations in Spain

- San Juan de Gaztelugatxe (Basque Country)

Sitting on an islet in Bermeo, this tenth-century shrine is surrounded by fabulous natural landscapes. To access the temple, you have to climb 241 zigzagging steps.

- Barrika (Basque Country)

The municipality of Barrika, also in Vizcaya, features an unspoilt beach, Muriola, surrounded by soaring cliffs in the area known as La Cantera.

- Itzurun Beach (Basque Country)

Close to San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, in Zumaia, in the province of Guipúzcoa, this beach is made of flysch, a curious geological phenomenon combining layers of hard rock with others of softer marine deposits.

- Almodóvar del Río (Andalusia)

This Andalusian village has one of the best-preserved castles in Spain. Originating as a Roman fort, the construction you can see today is Berber and dates back to the eighth century. The castle, rehabilitated in the past century, lies some 20km from the city of Córdoba and is open to the public.

- Atarazanas Reales in Seville (Andalusia)

Lying between the Cathedral and the Maestranza Bullring, this medieval shipyard used to belong to the old kingdom of Castile. The site has been designated as an Asset of Cultural Interest.

- Santiponce (Andalusia)

The municipality of Santiponce, in the province of Seville, is home to the archaeological site of Itálica, consisting of the ruins of a Roman city from 206 BC.

- Cáceres (Extremadura)

The old town of Cáceres has kept its medieval layout. Its amazing architectural complex caught the eye of the HBO producers.

- Trujillo (Extremadura)

Also in the province of Cáceres, about 47km from the capital city, there is Trujillo and its medieval castle – a fort built between the ninth and the twelfth centuries featuring several square defensive towers.

- Los Barruecos natural area (Extremadura)

Los Barruecos was designated as a Natural Monument by the Government of Extremadura in 1996. It is 14km from the city of Cáceres, in the municipality of Malpartida de Cáceres.

GoT and tourism

Thanks to Game of Thrones (GoT), some of the show’s location – Croatia, Iceland, Spain – have earned international renown.

Drawing on fans’ interest to get a deeper understanding of the characters and settings, several GoT tours are now available in the countries where the series has been shot. In Spain, Frikitrip offers tours of Seville, Extremadura, the Region of Valencia or even Ireland for GoT fans, who can see the locations where Dorne, the Sept of Baelor or Winterfell were recreated.
