Four out of ten news articles about Spain in the international press have to do with sports. This is one of the results of a report by the consulting firm GAD3, commissioned by the High Commissioner for Marca España, analysing Marca España coverage by the world’s leading newspapers. The other most discussed topics are economy (16%), politics (15%) and culture (7%).

These and other facts in the report were announced by Mr Espinosa de los Monteros at a Forum Europe event on 9 March. Every year, the leading international media publish as many as 600,000 news items about Spain. In 2016, the total was 2% higher than the previous year.

More findings in the GAD3 report: news about Spain in international media account for 9% of the total news published, which means that almost 1 in 10 articles are about our country. By country of publication, more than half the number of articles about Spain are published in Europe (54% in 2016, 2% more than in 2015).

In 2016, news about Spain hit a peak in May, mainly because of the UEFA Champions  League Final and other sporting events. However, the most dramatic bump in the number of published articles came in June (+21%), largely as a result of the social and political events in our country.

Finally, according to the GAD3 report, international news about the Spanish economy have been steadily going down since 2012, in the days of the financial bailout. In 2016, economic news accounted for 16% of all news about Spain – a record low for the past five years.
