Seville to host World Congress of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences in 2020
Seville has been announced as the location of the 2020 FIP World Congress of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, the leading event for pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists. Organised by the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP), the conference gathers more than 3000 professionals from over 100 countries every year, who discuss the future of pharmacy and medicines.
The announcement was made at the FIP Board meeting held in Seoul, the city where the 77th FIP World Congress is taking place under the slogan ‘Medicines and Beyond! The Soul of Pharmacy’.
Seville was proposed by the General Council of Official Pharmacists’ Colleges last year. Staging this congress, the city will become the world capital of pharmacy and pharmaceuticals and, for a few days, Spain will be the main focus of attention in the pharmaceutical industry.
The choice of our country to host the event is a clear recognition of the Spanish pharmaceutical excellence, as well as our pharmaceutical model, more oriented towards the people and their needs.
The congress will be an adequate international showcase for Spain’s effective pharmaceutical model and excellent health care system, a true symbol of Marca España.
Spain is among the European countries with the highest number of pharmacies per capita. With more than 21,000 pharmacies, 99% of the people have one close to their homes. Moreover, nearly one out of four drugstores stands in a rural area, and 2089 are in towns with less than 1000 residents.
Furthermore, several studies show that in Spain pharmacists rank third on the list of most prestigious professionals. They are visited by nearly 2.3 million people daily and give more than 182 million pieces of medical advice a year, in addition to selling medicines.
Finally, the decision to choose Seville to stage the 2020 FIP World Congress is in line with the major role Spanish pharmacies are playing in the global context. The President of the General Council of Official Pharmacists’ Colleges, Jesús Aguilar, has recently been appointed President of the Pharmaceutical Group of the European Union (PGEU) for 2018. FIP is chaired by a Spanish pharmacist too: Carmen Peña.
